In results released today Australian children were beaten by 26 countries in the 2011 Progress in International Reading and Literacy Study. The ACER who coordinated the tests said the results were surprising and disturbing.

The tests give children texts of up to 1000 words, considerably more than they are used to with Naplan tests, and they are required to read for instruction as well as comprehension of more complex writing.Their scores were lower than those of the US, Ireland, Canda among others.
