The annual New Zealand Bird of the Year election, hosted by the the Royal Forest and Bird Society of New Zealand is over, with the winner being a antisocial yellow eyed penguin.

However, the victory comes with a warning, as the Hoiho is one of many New Zealand birds near the edge of extinction. The situation is so concerning that the Royal Forest and Bird Society are urging for more government action, just days after Parliament passed a law which legislates that the government must cut all carbon emissions by 2050.
