The Federal Government has passed a new amendment to citizenship laws, changing the mechanism and threshold required to strip dual nationals of Australian citizenship which has operated since 2015.

Some experts have supported the removal of the automatic nature of citizenship loss but are concerned with the extension of the Home Affairs Minister’s powers, possibility of individuals becoming stateless and the threshold for offences committed.
