ACT same-sex marriage laws challenged in the High Court

As gay couples in Canberra prepare for wedding bells Australia’s High Court today began hearing the Commonwealth’s challenge to the ACT’s same-sex marriage laws. If given the thumbs up, will the law pave the way for states to legalise gay marriage? Or will the ACT fly the rainbow flag alone? This could depend on a peculiar inconsistency provision in the Australian Capital Territory (Self-Government) Act 1988.
